Dispersion of Light

The phenomenon of Splitting of white light into seven constituent colors when passed through the prism is called dispersion. As all constituent color of light have different refractive index they bend with different angle and emerges as different colours.

Why dispersion of light does not take place in a glass slab?

As glass slab behaves as double prism as shown in fig, dispersion takes place in first step for  very small distance again the splitted constituent of light combine each other before emerging from slab.

Slab acts as double prism and hence no resultant dispersion. Single prism clearly disperses light. Red light has large wavelength and bends with small angle and violet light bears lowest wavelength and hence bends with highest angle. From small to large wavelengths  there are are seven colors of light, Violet, Indigo, Blue, Green, Yellow, Orange and Red. in short form VIBGYOR.

Q. How is rainbow formed?Ans:rainbow is caused by sunlight and atmospheric conditions. Light enters a water droplet, slowing down and bending as it goes from air to denser water. The light reflects off the inside of the droplet, separating into its component wavelengths--or colors. When light exits the droplet, it makes a rainbow.
